sterling silver

Sterling silver tarnishes when exposed to salty air, chlorine, sulfur, humidity, perspiration, cosmetics, household bleach, and other strong chemicals. To prevent tarnish as much as possible, we recommend that you store your fine jewelry in a safe, dry place when engaging in the following activities:

  • Household and outdoor chores

  • Showering, bathing or swimming in pools, hot tubs, hot springs, and the ocean

  • Using lotion, hair products, fragrances, and other cosmetics

  • Exercising at the gym or during contact sports

  • Preparing meals

Tarnished silver jewelry can be polished using a polishing cloth, which you can find easily online!

brass

With time, raw brass may oxidize or display darker color than the the item was received in. Patina and Oxidation is natural. It may occur gradually over a long period of time, or quickly with exposure to humidity, chemicals or cosmetics. Rest assured, any discoloration can be quickly remedied, as all raw brass items can easily and always be restored to their original luster with some easy care.

To reduce the frequency in which you may need to clean or spot treat your brass, keep your brass out of humidity and quickly wipe down with one of our polishing cloths after removing after a day or night of wear.  We like to stash ours with anti tarnish strips for good measure - especially in the summer months!

For stubborn stains, use one of our polishing pads to remove any spots or deep tarnishing.

Concerning rings, particles and oils may become trapped in between the ring and finger, creating oxidation and marks on the skin’s surface. Keep hands clean and dry or add a layer of clear nail polish on the inside of the band to prevent this from occurring. Whenever possible remove, rings before washing hands, cooking, cleaning, or applying lotions to promote longevity of your piece.

gold plated

Our chains and selected styles are plated a durable 14kt Gold or Rhodium finishing. Using a 0 waste closed filtration system, our plating process is an extension of our values.

Plating can wear with exposure to abrasive substances or chemicals like the ones in cosmetic products, sunscreens, and sprays, or exposure an acidic PH / skin surface or sweat.

To ensure longevity, keep out of water for prolonged periods of time including when showering and swimming. Keep your pieces dry and clean with an abrasive-free microfiber cloth.

For items designed with a combination raw and plated materials, polish only the raw brass components and wipe clean the plated elements.

solid gold

GOLD IS FOREVER. It’ll never tarnish, never fade or lose its color, no matter how often you wear your Sisterfriend items. Water and wear will never ruin your gold. They are daily drivers.

Think of gold as an investment; you can pass it on for generations and it’ll hold its value.

Gold Vermeil (plating silver jewelry with gold for a gold-look) items will fade over time, especially if you wear your jewelry every day like we do. While we’re happy to fulfill plating requests for an additional fee, we do recommend going solid gold for your long term satisfaction!

A NOTE ABOUT SILVER. Silver is porous, so it holds moisture easily. Swimming, showering, and even just collecting moisture from the air, it will hold. This causes silver to oxidize and that turn silver black. The good thing about silver is that it’s soft. So if you give it a good rub with a soft cloth it will return to its former look.

At the end of the day, yellow gold, while more expensive, is less maintenance. You don’t have to take it off, or worry about it discoloring with water and wear!
